Crime and violence are a major social determinant of health outcomes identified in Healthy People 2030. Some of the research is obvious: People who survive violent crime endure physical and mental pain and suffering. However, there are numerous indirect spin-offs.

People who fear crime reduce time spent outdoors and thereby reduce the amount of exercise they do. Children exposed to violence are at greater risk for depression, anxiety and other mental health issues. Risky sexual behavior and an increased rate of addiction add to a cycle.
