PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Five women got to spend Christmas with their families instead of behind bars thanks to Philadelphia rapper Meek Mill.
He paid their bail and sent them each home with a gift card to buy groceries and holiday gifts.
The bail reform group REFORM Alliance, which Mill founded, shared the holiday gesture on Instagram.
Mill said, “For families impacted by the criminal justice system, the holidays can be an extremely challenging time. No one should have to spend the holidays in jail simply because they can’t afford bail, and no child should be without their parents during this time if we can do something about it. I’m grateful for the opportunity to help these women be with their families and loved ones during this special time of year.”
According to the group, the women were incarcerated at Riverside Correctional Facility in Philadelphia.
The organization plans to do the same for 15 more women in the coming week.
The REFORM Alliance was founded in 2019 by Mill, fellow rapper Jay-Z and former Sixers partner Michael Rubin.
