PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Lower Merion School District has named a new principal to replace Sean Hughes, who was killed in a car crash earlier this school year.

Michael Johnson will officially begin his new position at Lower Merion High School on June 20.

He has a bachelor’s degree in education from Temple University, a master’s degree in educational leadership, and K-12 principal certification from Gwynedd Mercy University. He is currently working toward his doctoral degree in educational leadership at Liberty University.

Johnson is currently the assistant principal at Harriton High School, a role he has held since 2014. He will finish out the school year and work with Lower Merion High administration teams to facilitate a smooth transition.

In November 2021, 51-year-old Hughes was driving his 13-year-old son to a soccer game when he collided with another SUV. He died that morning. His son was not seriously injured.

Police said the other driver, 54-year-old Azuka Ossai of Pine Hill, New Jersey, was speeding and blew a stop sign. He is charged with second-degree vehicular homicide.

Hughes was beloved in the Lower Merion school community. Many will be honoring him at the Broad Street Run this weekend with “Team Hughes” T-shirts. Hughes had participated in the 10-miler for more than 20 years. A portion of the money raised from the shirts will go toward the Sean Hughes Children’s Trust.

In a statement, Superintendent Khalid Mumin added, “I know that following Mr. Hughes, who was so beloved, will be a challenge. But I am confident that Mr. Johnson, along with LMHS’ stellar and experienced team of assistant principals, will build upon Mr. Hughes’ student-centered legacy and character-driven values, leading current and future students to infinite possibilities of success.”
