‘Who am I?’: The question Martin Luther King Jr. asked into a now-broken mirror at a Chester church

It remains at Calvary Baptist Church, and tells the story of King’s struggles as a civil rights leader

CHESTER, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — A top corner is missing from an old mirror hanging on a door in the pastor’s office at Calvary Baptist Church in Chester.

“Maybe it just cracked in some kind of way. I don’t know how it cracked,” said Rev. Keith Dickens. But it’s not just any mirror.

Dickens said it was the very mirror to which Martin Luther King Jr. asked himself a reflective question after just winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

King preached at Calvary Baptist while attending Crozer Theological Seminary from 1948-51.

He would often return to visit the church and spend time with his mentor, Rev. J. Pius Barbour, as he did after receiving the prize.

“He’s standing in this mirror and he says, ‘Who am I?’” said Dickens.

“Dr. King had bouts with depression and not feeling that he was worthy of this mantle that had been placed on him, and he was always reflective. We all should ask ourselves, ‘Who are we?’”

On Monday, Calvary Baptist held a service with inspirational words, then led 100 community members for a peace march.

The group then made its way to MLK Memorial Park for a clean-up effort.
