Haverford Township police confirmed on Wednesday that the driver who caused Tuesday night's crash involving a tractor trailer and a SEPTA bus was having a diabetic emergency at the time of the incident.
"Through our investigation we believe that the driver was suffering from some type of medical emergency, causing him to drive in the erratic manner that he was driving in," Haverford Township Deputy Police Chief Joseph Hagan said.
The driver, who was traveling east, crossed over to the westbound lanes at Eagle Road, where he hit two cars, a SEPTA bus and a tractor-trailer.

Hagen says there was no police pursuit, but an off-duty Upper Darby police officer in the proper lane was following the wayward Chevy. Hagan said the driver of the car is in the hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.
It was the seventh crash involving a SEPTA vehicle in recent weeks. Just hours later, in Philadelphia, an eighth collision happened at 15th Street and Oregon Avenue. SEPTA confirmed six passengers suffered minor injuries when two Route G buses collided.
Original story follows:
PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Four people were injured Tuesday evening in a multi-vehicle crash on West Chester Pike in Haverford Township. A section of the road was closed, and traffic was snarled on nearby roads for hours, as first responders flooded the scene and an investigation into the cause of the crash got underway.
Around 7 p.m., the driver of an SUV going eastbound on West Chester Pike veered into the westbound lanes, where he hit one car, then another, and then he hit a semi truck and a SEPTA bus, wedging his vehicle between the two, said Deputy Chief Joseph Hagen with Haverford Township police.
Police say the driver of that SUV suffered a medical emergency, and that's what caused him to cross the median into oncoming traffic.

Police say four people were hurt in all, including the driver of the SUV, who was taken to Lankenau Medical Center and treated there.
West Chester Pike was shut down between Eagle Road and Manoa Road after the crash.
All the vehicles involved were in pieces. Emergency responders were on the scene for hours, trying to clean up the mess. After the SUV was removed, they worked on towing away the tractor-trailer and pulling the bus off to the side of the road.

This is at least the seventh accident involving a SEPTA vehicle in the last few weeks.
