PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — October is the 25th annual Mural Arts Month, and Mural Arts Philadelphia will mark the occasion with a series of new projects.

Jane Golden, executive director of Mural Arts Philadelphia, known for her creative energy, is encouraging Philadelphia to buckle up for a fun and eventful October exploring new murals throughout the city.

The organization’s fall tours, including walking tours and tours by trolley, will showcase the new projects, starting with a pair of Philly sports icons. “This fall, we’re doing a mural of Dick Allen, the iconic baseball player who faced racism and overcame it,” Golden said, adding that a mural of Philly native, Olympic gold medalist and NCAA Championship-winning coach Dawn Staley is also planned.

Staley isn’t the only iconic Philly woman to receive the Mural Arts treatment. “We’re doing a mural of Jill Scott on Girls High,” Golden announced. The Grammy-winning singer and actress is one of Girls High’s many notable graduates.

Rounding out the month, Golden said, “We’re working with Michelle Ortiz, who is transforming the 9th Street Market with public art.”

Also in the works is a series of projects in Kensington, featuring artist Roberto Lugo.

“We’re doing a fabulous project with him in parks throughout Kensington,” promised Golden. “He’s going to do giant vessels. We have a pottery mobile and fabulous partners. It’s really exciting.”
