PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Museums in Philadelphia are closed as part of the city's order to stop the spread of COVID-19, but they're asking the public to remember them when doing holiday shopping.
One of those museums is the Museum of the American Revolution at 3rd and Chestnut streets in Old City.
The history museum is a private nonprofit, not a government-supported museum. It's dependent on earned income like from ticket and gift shop sales. President and CEO Scott Stephenson said you can buy gift tickets and memberships now and use them when operations resume.
"These are these are kind of like the forever stamps by the Post Office. These never expire. You can purchase them now and lock that admissions price in, use them when we safely reopen hopefully very early in 2021. Gift memberships are also available right through the website," he explained.
Memberships have been extended to 14 months instead of 12. And in a new offering, six people can have the whole museum to themselves for two hours. The rental costs $475.
"Something to do with your pod, with your family. It is really a once-in-a-lifetime type of experience and we can even accommodate larger groups," he said.
There is an online gift shop too. Stephenson said buying gifts, admission tickets and memberships now helps bring in much needed funding today, not when the museum reopens.
