PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A University City museum is using fashion, old and new, to open up a discussion about identity.
The clothing, accessories, and decorations we put on our bodies tell stories about who we are. They shape how others see us and how we see ourselves.
At least, that's the idea behind a new exhibit at the Penn Museum.
"It's a chance for people to think about what they put on their bodies in different ways," said Lauren Ristvet, curator of "Stories We Wear," the museum's new exhibit. She explained that what people wear connects them.
"What's interesting about this exhibit is that it shows a really wide range of both clothing and other elements of adornment," she said.
"It's really designed in a way that we are pairing contemporary objects and ancient or older material to get people to think differently about how they dress or why they dress."
With 2,500 years of style and adornment through more than 250 objects, the exhibit reveals how clothing and accessories offer powerful expressions of identity — examining the purpose and meaning behind them.
The exhibit is open through June 2022.
