PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — LGBTQ activists are organizing a new Philly Pride.
Just months after the abrupt disbanding of Philly Pride Presents following concerns of racism and transphobia, Abdul Aliy Mohamad, co-founder of the Black and Brown Workers Cooperative and one of several organizers of the revamped Philly Pride, says the community is making some changes.
"It’s necessary, because 28-plus years of Pride in Philadelphia has been held by very few people, all white, [in] a city with a plurality of Black and brown folks," he said.
Organizers said that, for the first time ever, the planning has been inclusive of the entire community.
"It’s important for a city’s Pride to reflect the city’s population fully," Mohamad said.
After meeting for a second time in July, organizers now say they plan to produce two Pride events, one in October of 2021 and another in June of 2022, including music, vendors and entertainment.
Currently, the queer community members that make up the new Pride group are determining committee leadership and finding more ways for the wider community to join in on the planning effort.
