PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Female business owners — particularly, restaurant owners hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic — are coming together for a first-ever series of traveling pop-ups.
Women helping women: That’s the focus of the inaugural Sisterly Love Citywide Food Fair, which takes place over the next three weekends at various locations across the city.
“And it’s going to be an all-women event,” said Jill Weber, one of the hosts of the event. “We’re going to have prepared foods. We’re going to have jewelry, art, home goods, but all from women entrepreneurs.”
Of course, those pop-ups will be outdoors on the sidewalk or street, to keep with COVID-19 restrictions.
“We’re following every single one,” Weber said of COVID-19 regulations. “We’re going to be very safe.”
Weber encourages holiday shoppers to support local restaurants and businesses.
“You could literally do all of your shopping at these food fairs,” she said. “To keep a thriving community, you need to keep the money in the community, and the only way to do that is to spend. Spend your money here.
“To keep (the community) vibrant means to keep people walking on the streets and keep things open at night and keep people employed and keep taxes flowing.”
It’s especially important this year, as business owners are stretching themselves more than they would in a typical year.
“So once the springtime comes and hopefully we’re out of this,” she added, “then what? You want to go out to your favorite restaurant? I hope it’s there.”
