CAMDEN, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — A Camden County judge ordered a couple to remain in jail as they are charged with horrific abuse of their daughter at their home in Blackwood, New Jersey.

Brenda Spencer and Brandon Mosley were each denied pre-trial release as each are facing life in prison if convicted.

They both sat emotionless in separate hearings as prosecutors laid out the evidence against them.

Judge Gwendolyn Blue said the allegations against the couple are “barbaric.” They are charged with keeping Spencer’s daughter in a dog crate and locking her in a room, rarely being allowed out. Mosley is also charged with sexual abuse.

Prosecutors also presented evidence that the couple frequently made fun of the victim through text messages to each other. Mosley is also accused of shaving the victim's head multiple times, and the couple called her ‘Buzz.’

The daughter, who is now 18, was taken out of school in the sixth grade and has not received any home schooling since. Prosecutors said she also suffers from learning disabilities. Her biological father is also in prison for sexual abuse from when she was very young.

Camden County Prosecutor Grace McAulay said the actions of Spencer and Mosley were “beyond inexcusable.”

“It’s absolutely unfathomable,” she said. “What our victim has suffered, physical abuse, sexual abuse, psychological abuse, is nothing short of domestic torture.”

Spencer and Mosley are due back in court on July 23.
