New Jersey sets COVID-19 daily case record for 3rd straight day

Current daily coronavirus totals more than double the previous records from January

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — As the omicron variant continues to spread, New Jersey has set a third straight single-day record for new COVID-19 cases.

The state health department reported 15,630 new COVID-19 cases on Christmas Eve. That topped the record of 15,482 set on Thursday, and the previous record of 9,711 set on Wednesday.

Last January, the time of the previous highest surge in cases, the single-day total record was 6,922.

New Jersey is seeing this surge as more people are being tested for COVID-19 before the holidays.

The state health department reports that COVID-19 hospitalizations are surging as well.

2,366 people are being treated for COVID-19 in hospitals. That figure represents the highest level since last April.

New Jersey is also reporting 27 more confirmed deaths, bringing its cumulative total to 26,006.

State health officials continue to urge residents to get their booster shots and to get tested before attending holiday gatherings.
