ATLANTIC COUNTY, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — A 70-year sentence was handed down by a South Jersey judge to the man who killed a 10-year-old bystander at a high school football game in 2019.
Atlantic County prosecutor William Reynolds says 35-year-old Alvin Wyatt fired eight times into the bleachers at a crowded Pleasantville High School football game on Nov. 15, 2019. He was convicted in July on murder, attempted murder and weapons charges.
Wyatt said he was acting in self-defense when he opened fire, striking three people, including a 10-year-old boy identified as Micah Tennant. Tennant died of his injuries on Nov. 20, on the day of the rescheduled game at Lincoln Financial Field.
Two others were wounded, including a 15-year-old boy and a 31-year-old man, Ibn Abdullah, who will spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair as a result of his injuries. Wyatt had said that he saw a gun in Abdullah's waistband and opened fire when he saw the man reach for it. Abdullah was charged with unlawful possession of a handgun.
Wyatt must serve at least 85% of his 70-year sentence before being eligible for parole.
