SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — A state investigation has uncovered more problems in New Jersey’s Motor Vehicle Commission that allowed people to vote even though they weren’t eligible.

These two issues are in addition to the improper registration of 6,600 noncitizens, which was revealed in July.

Gov. Mikie Sherrill said a comprehensive review of the procedures at MVC found 340 incarcerated people were improperly registered at reentry events over the last 10 years; some individuals incorrectly attested voter eligibility even though they were serving a sentence for an indictable offense.

The other issue involved mistakes related to age ineligibility. About 750 people checked a box indicating they were ineligible to vote, but the system sent them through anyway. The report found these were due to user error by pressing the wrong button on a pin pad, and that nobody under 18 actually voted.

To correct these issues, MVC is implementing multiple process changes so the system will automatically flag inconsistent records for manual review, and make prompts clearer and more accessible in multiple languages.

Sherrill said state officials left “no stone unturned” in the investigation, and she emphasized that no ineligible voters will remain on the rolls.
