SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin has co-authored a letter to the Biden administration, asking for more protections for transgender student athletes.

The letter comes from attorneys general in 12 states, including New York and California. They want youth, middle school and high school students to be able to compete in sports regardless of their gender identity.

These protections would prohibit schools from doing any physical examination or blood test to confirm gender. It would also prohibit schools from using alleged athlete safety and fairness concerns as pretext for excluding trans athletes.

This proposal would clarify how institutions receiving federal funding can stay compliant with Title IX for athlete eligibility. The letter urges the Biden administration to make clear that states have the right to establish broader protections for transgender athletes in state laws.

The letter follows a proposal from New Jersey state Sen. Michael Testa to ban trans athletes from women's sports. Testa represents parts of Atlantic, Cape May and Cumberland counties. He has argued that his measure would complement Congress' recently passed Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act.
