PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The New Jersey Forest Fire Service is working with companies along the Jersey Shore to contain a wildfire that has burned through more than 600 acres.
The fire was spotted Sunday afternoon inside a large forested area in Little Egg Harbor Township, Ocean County, near the intersection of Otis Bog Road and Stage Road. The site is near Route 9, a main road connecting many shore towns.
Many roads are closed because of fire fighting operations. Fire crews are conducting controlled burns to contain the fire. The Forest Fire Service says firefighters have been working through the night.
Officials say 30 structures are threatened by the fire, down from 100 Sunday. Voluntary evacuations are in effect for the area. The Pinelands Middle School is serving as a designated shelter.
People in the area are expected to see smoke for several days. No injuries have been reported.
Updates are available on the New Jersey Forest Fire Service Facebook page.
