With NJ COVID-19 cases rising, residents urged to remain vigilant with safety measures

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — As New Jersey reports another day of more than 1,000 new COVID-19 cases, the governor advised the public to remain vigilant with safety measures. He also has a travel advisory for residents.

Appearing on a video conference, Gov. Phil Murphy said there are an additional 1,182 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the cumulative total to 224,385 cases.

He urged the public not to get complacent and to follow CDC safety guidelines when it comes to gatherings.

“Folks, we can’t drop the ball here and that goes especially when welcoming people into our homes,” he said.

He said it’s believed outbreaks are coming from small gatherings in private homes.

The governor is also discouraging unnecessary interstate travel.

“So if you have to cross state lines whether you are going to work, going to the grocery store, for health care, to worship, that’s one thing. But we urge everyone to otherwise stay in New Jersey so we can focus on getting our numbers back down,” he added.

Murphy and his wife reported no symptoms of COVID-19 after a senior member of his staff tested positive. The Murphys have been tested and are planning additional tests this weekend.
