PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Driver fatigue played a major role in the fiery crash that caused an I-95 overpass in Northeast Philadelphia to collapse in June 2023, the National Transportation Safety Board said in its final report released Thursday.
According to the report, the driver, Nathan Moody, was potentially fatigued and going above the speed limit of 25 miles per hour when he exited the ramp on I-95. Investigators said Moody also left a hatch on the truck open, allowing fuel to spread quickly from his vehicle.
Moody died in the crash. A toxicology report found an allergy medication in his system that can cause drowsiness.
NTSB officials stressed the importance of developing more strategies to mitigate fatigue in commercial trucking.
An interim section of I-95 was constructed just two weeks after the collapse. A permanent road opened in May 2024.
