PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — I-95 northbound will be shut down for days after a truck carrying an oversized load struck the Conrail bridge in Northeast Philadelphia Monday afternoon.
PennDOT said starting at 10 p.m. Monday, drivers are being detoured to use the Betsy Ross Bridge/Aramingo Avenue Interchange (Exit 26), turn right on Aramingo Avenue, and turn right onto Adams Avenue to access the ramp to I-95 North.
The ramp from Castor Avenue to northbound I-95 will also be closed and detoured during construction. Drivers will be instructed to use Aramingo Avenue to access the ramp to I-95 North at Adams Avenue.
PennDOT advises people to avoid that area until construction is completed.
The incident happened around 1:30 p.m. While Conrail and PennDOT conducted inspections, the right two lanes were closed on that stretch of I-95, near the Exit 26 off ramp at Aramingo Avenue, forcing northbound drivers to squeeze by using only the left lane.
Drivers heading northbound on I-95 through the city's Northeast were delayed for as long as one and a half hours, and NJ Transit, Atlantic City Rail Line and commercial rail traffic was suspended.
The railroad on that bridge over the expressway is shared by Conrail and NJ Transit. Atlantic City Rail Line service was suspended in both directions between 30th Street Station and Cherry Hill. It is not yet known when the train service will resume but NJ Transit announced that rail tickets and passes would be cross-honored by PATCO, and a substitute bus service would be provided between 30th Street Station and Cherry Hill.
