PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th president Monday, vowing to bring about a "golden age of America."
Pennsylvania U.S. Sen. Republican Dave McCormick says it was a privilege to be a part of the inaugural festivities.
“It's easy to get cynical in politics sometimes. You know, you go through these tough campaigns, but you're sitting there in this Rotunda. I mean, it's incredible to come together today for the peaceful transfer of power in our democratic process,” McCormick said.
McCormick notes he and President Trump have had their differences over the years, but he feels they’ve developed a solid working relationship.
“I don't get real hung up on the rhetoric so much. You know, President Trump was very specific on what he was going to do as President, and I, you know, was very specific about what I'm going to do, and there's a lot of overlap with what I talked about and what he talked about.”
He says he believes the second Trump administration will be “transformative” and successful in “getting the country back on track.”
McCormick says as the new kid in town, he’s working to establish relationships, especially with Pennsylvania U.S. Sen. Democrat John Fetterman.
“I like him. I think we're going to be able to work together. Well, you know, we're not going to agree on everything, but when we disagree, we’ll disagree agreeably,” he said.
McCormick says he feels “a sense of deep commitment” to serve every Pennsylvanian, regardless of who they voted for.
