CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Two Pennsylvania state troopers were wounded after being shot in the line of duty in south central Pennsylvania.

Pennsylvania State Police said troopers responded just after 6 p.m. to a retail theft at a Dick's Sporting Goods in Chambersburg, Franklin County, about 60 miles southwest of Harrisburg.

A chase ensued, which ended when troopers used spike strips to disable the suspects' vehicle. Two female suspects inside the vehicle were arrested without incident, but a male suspect began shooting at troopers, hitting two of them.

Troopers returned fire, killing the suspect.

The troopers were taken to a nearby hospital and are listed in critical and serious condition.

In a statement on social media, Gov. Josh Shapiro asked the public to join him in praying for the troopers and their families.

"Pennsylvania’s law enforcement officers are the very best of us," said the governor, "running towards danger every day to keep our communities safe."
