PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Applications open this week for a popular stipend for student teachers in Pennsylvania.
It’s one way the state is addressing the teacher shortage — by providing $10,000 stipends to student teachers to help them defray costs. Applications for the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) program open on Thursday, April 16, and the stipends are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
To qualify, student teachers have to maintain a 3.0 GPA in college, and they have to commit to teaching in Pennsylvania for three years.
Demand for the stipends has outpaced supply in the first two years of the program.
In his budget proposal, Gov. Josh Shapiro has proposed raising the stipend fund from $30 million to $35 million.
