HARRISBURG, P.A. (KYW Newsradio) — The Pennsylvania Turnpike has released the results of its first-ever toll enforcement initiative, and they show that state police stopped more than 200 drivers on the turnpike who had suspended registrations because of unpaid tolls.
The Turnpike said 90% of the drivers took action to pay their unpaid tolls, and the effort netted the Turnpike an extra $400,000 in delinquent tolls collected compared to March — $1.7 million up to $2.1 million. One driver, they said, owed more than $100,000.
According to the Turnpike, about 93% of all drivers pay their tolls, but as of May of this year, there was still $246 million owed by drivers who haven’t paid their tolls.
Drivers who owe more than $250 in unpaid tolls can have their registrations suspended by PennDOT. PennDOT said there are more than 67,000 suspended registrations.
The Turnpike said it is working with the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office to take civil action against the worst offenders — that’s drivers that owe more than $12,000 in unpaid tolls.
