NORTH PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Mayor Cherelle Parker was at Temple University on Wednesday for a U.S. Department of Education meeting about education and equity for Black Americans, where she discussed a new course program the city plans to roll out at the Community College of Philadelphia to fill municipal jobs.
The City College for Municipal Employees, as Parker put it, will be special courses offered at CCP that are geared to train individuals for specific jobs the city needs to fill. She said the goal is to have students go straight from class to employment.
“So that you’re not going through a training program amassing $130,000 in student loan debt, like the mayor, that she/ll be paying until she’s dead,” said Parker.
The planned courses range from skilled trades to healthcare, technology, and business administration.
Parker also gave credit to the Biden Administration for making the program possible. She said the administration has sent $900 million to the city since she’s taken office, which has freed up some city funds for things like the City College for Municipal Employees.
