PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — 30th Street Station went dark for a few hours Tuesday morning as PECO crews worked on underground equipment issues in University City.
PECO said the outage started around 4:30 a.m. when underground cables overheated, creating a fire at 31st and Market streets. No one was injured.
In all, about 500 properties were without power.
Some lights at 30th Street Station — in the main hall where Amtrak is located — were still functioning, but the outage left stores and SEPTA riders without power.
SEPTA’s ticket windows were closed, and kiosks, turnstiles, elevators and escalators were not working. Fortunately, SEPTA and Amtrak trains were able to operate as usual.
Traffic lights were also out at several locations, including 30th and Market streets, and Chestnut Street and Schuylkill Avenue.
The station used a backup generator to get electricity running again.
PECO said it was able to restore most of the power that went out during the outage in University City and Center City, but crews are still working to get four properties back on.
PECO is still assessing the full extent of the damage.
