VOORHEES TOWNSHIP, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — Students and seniors who had been pen pals met face-to-face for the first time on Wednesday, and the Philadelphia Phillies’ improbable World Series run became their topic of conversation and point of connection.

“A ‘K.’ If you see that, that means they struck out,” said Lois Goldberg, 86, holding a baseball scorecard.

While rocking her 2008 NLCS Champions t-shirt, she explained how to keep score at a baseball game to her pen pal Natalie, a fifth-grader at nearby Kellman Brown Academy.

Bonding over baseball, what’s better than that?

“I love watching them all get home runs, and them winning,” Natalie said. “I really like Bryce Harper.”

“This has been outstanding,” said Goldberg. “Somebody said that they were surprised to see me walking down the hall. They thought I would be floating.”

Lois has experienced six Phillies’ World Series and many other postseason runs in her lifetime. She was at Citizens Bank Park keeping score when her favorite player, Roy Halladay, threw a playoff no-hitter in 2010.

She and Natalie both say it’s been fun talking to each other and finding common interests.

“It’s interesting to learn about them and it’s very exciting,” said Natalie. “We like cats and we like to be organized.”

“I just enjoy it,” said Goldberg. “I taught school for over 30 years in Philadelphia and my goal with them is to have fun this year.”

Both Lois and Natalie say they are really looking forward to seeing the ‘Fightins’ hoist the World Series trophy.
