PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Five months of inconvenience started Monday morning for drivers on local Vine Street east of Broad Street. But when the construction is finished, PennDOT says Vine Street will be safer for drivers, bikers and pedestrians.

PennDOT’s “road diet” will reduce local Vine Street from three lanes to two, in both directions, between Eighth and Broad streets.

Weekday, daytime lane closures will take place at Broad and Vine streets between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. during construction.

“This project will also upgrade traffic signals, install ADA-compliant curb ramps, bump-outs or curb extensions, bike lanes, and a complete mill and overlay of the roadway,” said Krys Johnson, PennDOT safety press officer.

The work also includes adding a second left turn lane from southbound Broad Street to Vine Street to ease congestion.

The $8.5 million project is designed to reduce crashes and make Vine Street safer for cyclists and pedestrians.

The lane closures will continue through Jan. 16, 2026. Johnson said the entire federally funded project — separate from plans to cap the Vine Street Expressway through Chinatown — is expected to be completed by next summer.
