Pennsylvania SPCA hosts big screen, drive-in fundraiser

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A fun family event will take place next weekend in South Philadelphia, and it will help raise funds to save animals' lives at the same time.

The drive-in movie event will be held Saturday, October 10 in the IKEA parking lot in South Philly to benefit the Pennsylvania SPCA.

Moviegoers can bring blankets and folding chairs, or view the movie "A League Of Their Own" from the comfort of their cars. The sound comes from speakers set up in the parking lot or from your AM radio.

"There will be a parking spot between each car," said PSPCA spokesperson Gillian Kocher. "So we will have lots of space to spread out if people do, in fact, want to get out of their car."

Kocher said fundraising events like this one are important and support the organization's life-saving mission.

"We absolutely have to get creative in this year due to everything that has been going on with the pandemic, but we're trying to pivot as much as we can and do events like this which is a drive-in and it keeps us socially distanced and safe," she said.

"And it's so important because our work here at the Pennsylvania SPCA does not stop during a pandemic," Kocher added. "We have been here the whole time rescuing animals from cruelty and neglect."

Kocher said while they've been able to transition to virtual events well enough, nothing matches hosting an in-person event like this one.

"You know we have done lots of fun things (virtually), but we are so excited that we can finally host an in person event," she said.

Ticket information is available at the PSCPA website.
