PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — An artist studio that has helped mold Philadelphia communities for decades is getting a new home, part of the organization's initiative to bring calm through clay.
The Clay Studio, currently located in Old City, is all about inspiring curiosity and discovery through the art and craft of clay. They are moving north to a new spot in South Kensington.
"Our mission is really just community and artists, and how we can bring every aspect of the community and every different skill level of artist together to create something beautiful out of clay," said Clay Studio Executive Director Jennifer Martin.
She added that in the past, they had been able to take their claymobile to different communities.
Martin calls that effort crucial in providing people from violent and crime-ridden areas with outlets.

"There's something that is very calming about the process that allows you to just feel like you’re in control of this material in the chaotic world that we’re living in, where we're not always in control," said Martin.
Martin said their new home, located near the corner of North American and Jefferson streets, is a large space that will allow them to work as a hub for professional artists as well as Philadelphians looking for art therapy.
"Instead of just being able to go out, we’ll also be able to welcome those communities into our new building," she said.
Martin explained they are also working with partners to host specialized classes to help people dealing with trauma.
"To bring in specialized teachers and offer teacher training, and then we’ll be able to launch those courses," said Martin.
The new studio is expected to open in early April.
