PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia City Council President Darrell Clarke has scheduled the special election for the 6th District Council seat for May 17, the same day as Pennsylvania’s primary election.

That move will save taxpayers money and voters time.

The seat has been vacant since Bobby Henon resigned in January, following his conviction on federal corruption charges along with labor leader John Dougherty.

Henon was found guilty of conspiracy, bribery and eight counts of honest services fraud. He is scheduled to be sentenced next month.

Clarke said back in January that the 6th District offices would remain open and staffed while the Council seat remained empty. Services for citizens living in the district remained in place as well.

The Democratic City Committee has endorsed State Representative Mike Driscoll for the seat, which virtually assures his election.
