PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Riders on SEPTA’s Airport Line may notice improved surroundings when they arrive at Philadelphia International.

Over the last two years, the airport’s Regional Rail stations have received a major makeover. The vestibules got new carpeting, ceilings and HVAC systems. And on the platforms, there’s new signage, concrete and better lighting.

“Upgraded LED lighting,” added Api Appulingam, PHL’s chief development officer. “We installed over 700 lights on these platforms.”

At a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, SEPTA General Manager Leslie Richards said the upgraded platforms should be welcomed by more than a million travelers each year.

“Seventy-eight times a day, SEPTA Airport Line trains to and from the airport carry people to the start of their journey or home to loved ones,” she said. “These were much-needed improvements for SEPTA and our customers.”

Service was not affected by the construction. The airport paid for the renovations using $1.5 million in state grants.

Richards said the improved stations will play a larger role in providing a first impression for visitors arriving for big events in 2026, like the nation’s semiquincentennial.
