PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Former Philadelphia Mayor Bill Green has made an endorsement in the May Democratic primary race for the seat he once occupied.
Green says he gave a great deal of thought to his endorsement before choosing real estate mogul and former City Councilmember Allan Domb.
“He’s got the ability, the brains, the tenacity, the record — and I believe he’s a caring, compassionate person who worked his way up from the bottom,” Green said.
Green said he believes Domb’s success in business would translate to success in running city government.
Green is the highest profile endorsement Domb has received. This is, by his count, the 17th mayoral election in which he has been active, and he felt it was important to make an endorsement.
“I’ll be 85 in June, and I don’t see whether I’ll be here for one more mayoral election after this, and I didn’t think silence is something I should opt to do. So I care about what happens to the city — not just for the future for me, but I have four children, six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren — and I want this city to be a wonderful place for them. And I think the best shot of all the candidates in the race to help make that happen is Allan Domb.”
Three other former mayors — Michael Nutter, John Street and Ed Rendell — have endorsed Rebecca Rhynhart. Former Mayor Wilson Goode has said he won’t be endorsing anyone.
