PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A Philadelphia police officer, shot last week by the alleged Jefferson Hospital gunman, has been released from the hospital after spending nine days in treatment.

Arcenio Perez, 30, was shot in the right arm while officials say he and three other officers tried to disarm Stacey Hayes.

Dozens of police officers arrived at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center on Wednesday to salute Perez as he left the hospital in a wheelchair.

Hayes, 55 is accused of walking into Jefferson Hospital in Center City and killing co-worker Anrae James, 43, in the early morning of October 4.

Police said that later that early morning, their officers discovered Hayes wearing body armor near a school in East Parkside near Fairmount Park. Authorities said he fired at police. Perez and another officer, Edwin Perez, were injured during the encounter.

Hayes has since been charged with murder, assault on law enforcement, and gun charges.
