PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — They’re not ready to make a splash yet, but the city and School District of Philadelphia are inching closer to creating a plan to reopen the dilapidated swimming pool at Sayre High School’s rec center in West Philadelphia.
Superintendent Tony Watlington told the school board on Thursday that the district and the city were working on a partnership to reopen the Sayre pool at 59th and Spruce streets. The district-owned pool has been closed since 2017 after the building that houses it fell into disrepair.
Last year, the school board voted down a $10 million plan to rehabilitate the building. Watlington said now, there’s movement.
“The district is currently working on an updated cost estimate for reopening the pool,” he said. “We will meet with city officials in mid-April to provide an update on the progress.”
The city used to train lifeguards at the pool. The district said the plan would include a clear outline of how the pool would be made available to the community once the work is finished.
Watlington expects the plan to be ready for a school board vote in May.
