PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Starting Wednesday, March 27, the Philadelphia Police Department is giving away free steering wheel locks to registered owners of Hyundai and Kia vehicles. The program is called Operation Wheel Lock, or OWL.

Any Philadelphia resident who is the registered owner of a 2012-2022 Hyundai or Kia vehicle can go to any one of the city’s 21 police districts and get a free lock.

Kias and Hyundais have been targeted by car thieves all over the country because of a widely publicized hack that makes them easy to steal without a key. Both car manufacturers have tried to redesign these models to make them more difficult to steal.

Department’s website.
