PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A 14-year-old boy has been charged with murder in the beating death of an elderly man from North Philadelphia.

The boy, whom we are not naming because of his age, faces third-degree murder and conspiracy charges in the attack on James Lambert, 73, at about 2:30 a.m. on June 24 near the corner of 21st Street and Cecil B. Moore Avenue.

Investigators believe it started after a brief argument.

Surveillance video available on the Philadelphia Police Department YouTube channel shows a group hitting Lambert with street cones and other objects.

In the video, he was seen falling to the ground and hitting his head on the pavement.

Be aware, the video may be disturbing to some readers and is age-restricted.

Detectives say Lambert died shortly after the attack. The Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the cause of death to be blunt force injuries to his head.

The 14-year-old and his 10-year-old brother walked to police headquarters and spoke with investigators. The 14-year-old was placed in custody at a juvenile detention center, but the 10-year-old left with his mother.

Officials credit the public with help in identifying all seven kids in the group.

One of them, a 14-year-old girl, is working with officials to turn herself in. Police say the two 14-year-olds are believed to have done the most damage.
