PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Philadelphia School Board is set to adopt a resolution Thursday night that supports an effort to register 18-year-olds to vote.
In addition to instruction on voting rights in social studies classes, the district aims to get as many 18-year-old students as possible registered to vote.
The year-round effort would provide voter registration forms to any student who asks, and each building would have staffers to act as nonpartisan “voter champions” and register eligible students before they graduate.
“Here’s an opportunity while at school to do it,” said Superintendent William Hite. “Anytime we can provide the opportunity and access for young people to register, then that’s what we want to do.”
Hite said many students have been involved with the “Vote That Jawn” effort, emphasizing the power of student voices. He said the school board action officially brings voter registration into schools.
