PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The community at General George A. McCall School is coming together to help the children whose mother was killed in Tuesday’s hit-and-run in Center City.

All three daughters of the woman who was killed attend the elementary school, near Washington Square. The mood there among the adults is somber, said teacher Kristyn Aria, who has the woman’s 8-year-old in her first grade class.

“She loved them very much. And she would be in school here telling them that all of the time,” Aria said.

The McCall Home and School Association has set up a GoFundMe for the family.

“It’s not been 24 hours yet, and we’ve raised almost $20,000. But Philadelphia is a great city, and we really do have wonderful people here, and this just shows and proves it,” Aria said.

“This doesn’t bring her back.  But I hope that it will help so that they don’t feel  like they have nothing.”

Aria says she’s already heard from teachers at other schools whose students are raising money. Counselors have been available for classmates who want to talk.
