Woman dead, 8-year-old daughter hospitalized after Center City hit-and-run; 2 other children unharmed

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A 38-year-old woman who was struck, with her 8-year-old daughter, on Tuesday night in Center City by a driver who fled the scene, has died, according to police. A person of interest is in custody as well as the vehicle involved in the crash.

The girl is in the ICU at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia with head injuries. Two other two daughters, ages 10 and 11, who were at the scene, were not hit. The uninjured girls were also taken to CHOP, where they were met by social workers.

The crash occurred on the 1300 block of Arch Street, according to investigators. Around 10 p.m., officers spotted a dark gray Jeep, with its headlights off, speeding the wrong way down JFK Boulevard, near 16th Street, and began to follow the driver. When the driver got to Arch Street, near Broad Street, the Jeep struck the woman and her daughter.

Witnesses told police that it looked like the woman was trying to push her kids out of the way. The impact was so great that she was thrown about 20 feet into the air.

The unidentified woman was taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in extremely critical condition with multiple fractures and severe head trauma. She was pronounced dead around 1:30 pm. Wednesday.
