PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Eleven teenagers from a West Philadelphia school were sickened on Wednesday after drinking drug-laced juice.
Monique Braxton, deputy chief of communications and spokesperson for the School District of Philadelphia, said two Crossroads Accelerated Academy students brought a bottle of grape juice laced with “an opioid substance” to the school at 43rd Street and Westminster Avenue.
“And so far we've been able to determine that 11 students drank the liquid. They started immediately experiencing lightheadedness and throwing up,” Braxton said.
Officials say the school called 911 just before noon. Five students were taken to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and are in stable condition. Six students were picked up by their parents.
Braxton said the students involved range in age from 14 to 16.
The Philadelphia Police Department and the district’s Office of School Safety are investigating.
