PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Former Phillies manager Charlie Manuel is on the road to recovery after suffering a stroke over the weekend.

During Monday night’s game, NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Tom McCarthy and John Kruk delivered the welcome news of Manuel’s recovery. They announced that he has been moved out of the intensive care unit.

The 79-year-old suffered a stroke during a medical procedure in Florida on Saturday. Doctors removed a blood clot.

His wife, Missy, said he is recovering well. She told McCarthy that they are receiving prayers and support not just from Phillies fans but from all over the baseball world.

“Got his phone with him, so he’s reading text messages. He is squeezing the doctor’s hand and Missy’s hand, too,” McCarthy shared.

Manuel is the winningest manager in Phillies history, with 780 wins. He led the team to back-to-back World Series appearances, including the historic victory in 2008.
