PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Fans of Roku’s “The Great American Baking Show” will have a familiar face to cheer on as its newest season rolls out this Memorial Day weekend.
Victoria Walters, of Philadelphia, was always a fan of the “Great British Bake Off,” but never thought it was a world she could be a part of.
“I had never heard of ‘The Great American Baking Show,’ she said. “I had no idea that there was one. And a friend sent me the post on Facebook and I was like, ‘Yeah, of course I want to apply.’”
But the pandemic shut that chance down in 2020 and two more failed auditions passed before Walters made the final contestant pool.
“Preparing to be on the show, I have become such a better baker,” she said.
This passion dates back to when Walters was a kid. She said growing up, her mom and grandma were always baking, and by age 3, she was already following in their footsteps.
“The thing that my family literally quotes is this home video of me on my third birthday making my birthday cake,” she remembered.
The carrot cake recipe she made that birthday is one Walters still makes today, but her repertoire has expanded significantly since being on “The Great American Baking Show.”
“It’s pretty cool to have made that journey, and I feel like I can really bake anything,” she said.
“... It’s awesome to get to share something I love so much on a greater level.”
