PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — NextFab, a network of maker spaces throughout Philadelphia is teaming up with Philly Fixers Guild, a collaborative of makers to host a series of "repair fairs."
Rebecca Ledbetter with NextFab says it’s simple: If anything’s broken, damaged, or disassembled, Philly Fixers Guild will help you fix it — for free.
“The Fixers Guild is a volunteer repair outlet located in North Philly,” she said. “Their big motto is 'Why replace it when you can repair it?'"
Volunteers teach you how to fix almost anything, from appliances and electronics to clothing and more. Ledbetter says at its core the events are about empowerment and getting your hands dirty while learning something new along the fixing journey.
“People just love seeing items that they thought were completely broken, thought it was impossible to fix them,” she said.
Volunteers are the heart of the guild. They donate their time, skills, and sometimes even their tools.
But NextLab’s got your back on that one. Ledbetter says you don’t even need to bring tools.
“We’re really excited that we have all the tools,” she said. “They can just grab a hammer or drill or something like that.”
The fairs are every second Thursday of the month at 1800 North American Street in North Philadelphia.
