PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — While your Christmas tree may just be a pretty sight to you and your family, it can also serve as a yummy bite for some furry friends.
Philly Goat Project’s Tree-Cycle Festival is back for its seventh year. Beginning Jan. 4 at noon, folks can come out to The Farm at Awbury Arboretum and donate their Christmas tree to help feed some hungry goats.
But don’t worry, the fun doesn’t end there. The project’s Executive Director and Founder Karen Krivit, also known as Goat Mom, says while there, people can pet and cuddle with the goats — some of which will be sporting fashionable reindeer antlers.
Krivit calls the event a “festival of sustainability.”
“You can actually see the goats eat the trees, then the limbs are chopped up and become pathways to all the beautiful gardens at the farm,” she said.
In addition to hanging out with the animals, attendees will also get free s’mores, hot cocoa and a warm seat by some fire pits.
Leslie Jackson, also known as Folxherder, is the director of operations. She said the donated trees will give the goats food until May.
And if you miss the first event on Jan. 4, don’t worry, you still have two more opportunities — one on Jan. 11 from noon to 3 p.m. at The Farm at Awbury Arboretum, and another on Jan. 18, from noon to 3 p.m. at Laurel Hill West Cemetary in Bala Cynwyd. Rain dates are the following day.
There’s a suggested $20 donation for each event but they say they are grateful for just the tree, as it’s a gift that keeps giving.
