PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Four Philadelphia police officers were injured while breaking up an illegal car meetup early Sunday.
It happened shortly after midnight in the parking lot of the Target on City Avenue.
When police arrived, they said as many as 50 vehicles sped off. Some of those cars sped toward a pair of police cruisers, causing them to swerve and crash into light poles on the side of the road.
Three officers were taken to the hospital, but they are expected to be OK.
A fourth officer was injured a few hours later when police surrounded a red Camaro suspected of being at the meetup. As officers moved in, the driver backed up and hit one of them.
Police fired shots at the Camaro but the driver sped away. The cops later found the Camaro abandoned. Investigators said it had been stolen and the tags were switched at least twice.
