PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Some area school districts have decided to open late on Monday to give students and staff a chance to celebrate an Eagles Super Bowl win, or to ease the pain of a loss. Philadelphia, though, decided not to change its schedule.
School District of Philadelphia Superintendent Tony Watlington said win or lose, schools will open on a regular schedule on Monday, Feb. 10. He announced his decision on the district’s YouTube channel, seemingly not wanting to tempt fate.
Two years ago, the district scheduled a two-hour delay after Super Bowl LVII, when the Eagles lost to the Chiefs.
"In 2018, when the Eagles went to Super Bowl LII and won against the New England Patriots, as I recall, we did not have a two-hour delay in the school district," he said.
So, to avoid jinxing anything, he said schools will stick with the winning tradition and open as usual.
“I look forward to seeing you back at school and work on Monday. Go Birds!” he said to conclude the video.
Philadelphia School District students and staff are encouraged to wear green on Friday to cheer on the Eagles.
In New Jersey, at least five districts or schools in New Jersey will operate on two-hour delays Monday, including Cumberland Regional High School, Camden County Technical School District, Gloucester City, Haddon Heights, and Pennsauken.
Kickoff for Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Sunday.
