NORTHAMPTON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Police shot and killed a knife-wielding man in Northampton Township, Bucks County on Sunday, authorities said. One officer was injured in the incident.

It happened around 7:30 p.m. on Elm Avenue near Aqua Drive in Churchville, according to the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office. The street has several single-family homes.

Officials say police intervention was requested after receiving reports of a man attempting to take his own life with a knife.

Upon arriving at the scene, police say 40-year-old Mark Chambers was "wielding a large knife while coming towards them." That's when police shot him. Chambers was taken to the hospital, where he died shortly after 8 p.m.

An autopsy showed he had suffered multiple gunshot wounds and ruled the cause of death as homicide.

A Northampton Township police officer was also treated for injuries suffered in the incident. The extent of his injuries is unknown.

The Bucks County District Attorney’s Office did not comment on the circumstances leading up to the shooting. The county coroner did confirm that the man had a knife.

The DA’s office said it would make a determination whether this was a justified shooting or not. Until then, officials will not comment on what happened.
