PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A former cop, who was arrested for driving into a Northeast Philadelphia house after a night of drinking at the police union bar last year, pleaded guilty on Wednesday.
Gregory Campbell, 28, was two years into his role as a 14th District officer. He admitted to driving into a home on Comly Road, near Caroline Road, in February 2021, critically injuring a 53-year-old woman who was cuddled on the couch with her dog.
The woman was trapped under the car, but emergency crews were eventually able to free her. Her dog, however, died.
A 45-year-old man also inside the house was injured, but he has physically recovered. Prosecutors say the woman endured several surgeries and is still recovering.
Campbell had a .20 blood-alcohol level — more than double the legal limit.
He pleaded guilty to aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence, DUI criminal mischief, recklessly endangering another person, and simple assault charges.
Campbell was fired from the department last year. “From the beginning,” said his attorney, “Mr. Campbell has taken responsibility, and his thoughts continue to be with the family.”
He is expected to be sentenced in late June.
