PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Authorities are asking for the public’s help in trying to identify the suspect in the shooting of a Philadelphia School District safety officer over the weekend.

According to police, it was around 1:45 Sunday morning when a road rage incident erupted between the drivers of a white Kia Sportage and black Dodge pickup truck on I-95.

The man in the SUV pulled a gun on the other driver, leading to a chase that ended up on Columbus Boulevard. They flagged down the school safety officer, who was inside a marked public safety vehicle near Dave and Buster's, according to authorities.

When the officer — who was also a retired Philly police officer — attempted to intervene, the Kia driver opened fire, shooting him in the face and torso.

Police have released pictures and video of the Sportage, made between 2017 to 2019. It was last seen driving east on Girard Avenue. The SUV had a missing license plate, a sticker in the upper left hand windshield, and was being driver by a dark-haired male with a bowl-style cut, wearing a red or orange shirt.

Anyone who may know the man is urged to call police.

The victim remains in critical condition.
