POTTSTOWN, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Five people were taken to the hospital early Thursday morning after a fire broke out in a Pottstown apartment building for seniors.

Around 6 a.m., officials said they received 911 calls for a fifth-floor fire at the Robert P. Smith Towers at Washington and High streets.

First responders took five residents to the hospital for injuries and smoke inhalation. Their conditions have not been released.

The Red Cross is helping those who were displaced. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Some Pottstown residents saw SWAT teams in the area, but Montgomery County officials said they were serving warrants at properties that had no connection to the fire.
